What is a flu vaccine?
A flu vaccine is designed to protect against the influenza virus. The vaccine composition is renewed every year based on the circulating strains recommended by the World Health Organization. The trivalent influenza vaccine commonly available in Hong Kong follows the WHO’s recommended strains for the season.
The Centre for Health Protection recommends everyone aged above 6 months receive the seasonal flu vaccine to protect themselves against infection.
When is the best time to get a flu shot?
It takes about two weeks for immunity to develop in the body, so it’s best if you arrange your corporate flu vaccination program before the winter influenza season starts in January, giving your employees time to build up protection.
Should employers offer flu vaccines to employees?
As an employer, you’re not obligated to offer flu vaccines, but there are plenty of good reasons to do so. Here’s why we recommend introducing a flu vaccination program.
Protect your employees’ health
Influenza can cause coughing, sneezing, headache, muscle aches, and sore throat, and in the worst case, severe complications or even death. The WHO estimates that respiratory diseases caused by seasonal influenza result in 290,000 to 650,000 deaths globally each year. A flu shot remains the most effective way to prevent flu infection.
Reduce absenteeism and boost productivity
An employee who catches the flu may need 2 to 3 days of sick leave, and even after returning to work, reduced productivity can linger for up to a week while they recover. Encouraging your team to get vaccinated helps prevent the flu from spreading through the office, saving you the cost of absenteeism and keeping productivity up.
Improve employee engagement
A corporate flu vaccination program is a meaningful employee health benefit and a simple way to show you care. Companies that invest generously in employee wellbeing tend to retain talent for the long run.
